What is shown in the table above shows us clearly that significant changes have taken place in the number of traffic accidents in Chinese cities in the past several years. According to the figures given in the table, one can see clearly that on the whole the number of traffic accidents was on the rise. Compared with what happened in the year of 2004, the number of accidents caused by drivers tuning left without due care climbed by 10%, the number of accidents caused by drivers traveling too close to other vehicles by 9%, that caused by drivers traveling too close to other vehicles by 12%, and that caused by drivers driving under the influence of alcohol by 15%. The only exception is that the number of accidents caused by drivers failing to give a signal fell a little .

Some driving factors that contribute to the above-mentioned phenomenon may be summarized as follows.First of all, with the rapid development of Chinese economy and society, a growing number of average Chinese families are beginning to purchase private cars. According to the data released by the relevant authorities, more than 60% families in some cities have owned private cars. What’s more, some drivers didn’t receive any proper training before they acquired their driving licenses. Besides, an important factor worth our concern is that both the drivers’ and the pedestrians’ sense of regulations needs improving.

Based upon what has been discussed so far, I think it’s imperative for the authorities concerned to take immediate measures to eliminate or at least ease the present worsening situation. And the public, especially the drivers as well as the pedestrians, should be educated to be more self-conscious to follow the traffic regulations.
